Why do panasonic digital cameras keep on creating *.jpg files when I record movies in *.mov?

Appreciate the first response but it looks like you don't have a panasonic digital camera.

Here's what I did:
1. Pushed the "red-dot" button for video recording - THIS IS THE SETTING THE RECORD A MOVING VIDEO - Not a photograph.

This button also automatically will start recording video.

2. About 1 minute later, I press the "red-dot" button again to stop recording the video and write the video file into the memory card.

3. I remove the SD card from the camera and plug it in to my computer. My computer detects it and lists all the *.mov and *.jpg files in the SD card.

The list shows the following:
*.jpg - for all the still photographs I've taken.

For videos, I see two files: a *.mov file for the video, and a *.jpg file that shows the photograph for the very first frame of the *.mov.

My questions are:
1. Why do Panasonic digicams have this feature?
2. Can I turn this feature off?

Public Comments

1. Check out the right mode you chose. Make a video or take picture.

2. besides recording movies to the SD card, your camera also allows you to delete clips so as to conserve memory space that might be needed later. the still photo is used as kind of an icon to help you identify clips visually when they are still in the camera. the memory space used by one picture is inconsequential compared to the disasater that would happen if you deleted the wrong movie clip.
