What type of camcorder should i get?

Im looking to buy a camcorder. And im thinking to buy one at a reasonable price. Im am planning to film things. A media teacher recommended Panasonic 3CCD camcorders. But i want the video to look semi-professional. Which camcorders should i buy and how do i tell what the recording resolution is (not the still picture resolution)?
Or should i get a digi cam? In that case, how do i know what resolution the recording is? I want it to look semi-professional
