Anyone know what causes the horizontal lines on digital video camcorders recordings? Bad tapes?

If so what brand is the best. I have ben using Sony and Panasonic and have had the most issues with Panasonic. Or then again maybe it is the camera, I don't know. Not many resources here in Big Sky country.

1. For miniDV, it is recommended to not switch brands of tapes between Sony and anyone else. It is believed that Sony tapes use a different lubricant from the rest (most of which are actually made by Panasonic), and if the two kinds of lubricant mix, it can clog up your heads. You should run a cleaning tape briefly every time you switch tape brands.

Some people claim that this issue was fixed a long time ago and it doesn't matter anymore, but then again, other people seem to run into this issue even recently. Nobody really knows to what extent it's true.
