1. Both are good but i recommend u to go for Sony

2. It depends on what level you are now:- amateur, beginner, hobbyist, prosumer, professional to determine which cameras and brands suits to you. If you are beginner, choose Sony handycam, while if you are prosumer, Canon XL2 is suitable. Then if you are professional, then choose Sony camcorder (broadcast quality)

3. I have a canon, that uses mini dv, I like it. My son has the sony handy cam and they have had troubles with downloading.
