Sony Camcorders record in MPEG-2 format. What file extension would this be?

Hi.

I'm looking into buying a Sony camcorder for use in schools. It should be cool. But I want to be sure that my Windows Vista laptop AND the School XP laptops can edit the files on Windows Movie Maker. I've heard that things like .mod files don't play ball with Vista. Can someone explain to me what kind of file extension Sony camcorders typically record in?

1. You would just need to convert the .MOV files to MPEG. There are many down-loadable programs to do that. See link.

2. Hi there

Most of the "new" video formats WMM wont work with, and you will have to start to convert video from one format to another. Not only a pain but also time consuming, assuming that like most schools the computers a not exactly the newest ones around you have more of a limited choice.

Both Flash drive and HDD camcorders use a highly compressed video format, its the kiss of death to older computers. They just cannot cope with the work needed, to edit.

DVD (mini-dvd) not an option they are a total waste of money. You are now down to Mini-dv Tape. Although it does require Firewire IEEE 1394 to capture the video Card needed in a computer, its an Industry standard and 99% of all editing software will work with it, even older machines.

You do not say what sort of school you are talking about but if its a multimedia class there should be at least one computer with Firewire, and normally the other computers are networked that may be a war round it.

Once captured the video will have an AVI extension, although not a video file rather a containers for a video file this will work perfectly with WMM.
