should i buy panasonic digital camera rather than Canon?

i.e Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18K Digital camera

1. It depends on what kind of camera you need, not the brand.

If you want more manual option, you may choose canon.
If you want more automatic option, you may choose panasonic

2. The FZ18 appears to be a typical Panasonic camera (way too much noise and a heavy handed approach to noise reduction).
If you like shooting in low light and need a high ISO, then you will be disappointed by the noise levels of this camera.

But, if your shots will mostly be taken in very good outdoor lighting, then it should be ok. Canon's S5 IS is a better camera, but it has it's own noise problems too. Not as bad as the Panasonic, though.
