Why won't my new Windows Vista laptop upload footage from my Sony or Canon camcorders?

I have tried many firewire (4-pin to 4-pin) & USB chords. Both camcorders are standard. Any suggestions?

1. Did it say it installed the driver? If not put in the disc that the camcorder came with. or if lost, u can download them off there website
