Does the Sony and Canon HD camcorders output different Formats?

Forgive me , I am a little new to this. I heard that the output for Sony is ACVHD, while other formats are in Mpg4? What is the difference? any special software require to edit sony ?

1. MPEG-4 is quite a broad standard and AVCHD conforms to that standard. So, while you can say that AVCHD is MPEG-4, you can't say that MPEG-4 is AVCHD. It used to be the case that even AVCHD wasn't precisely defined, so that different manufacturers' implementations weren't compatible. These days it's a fair bet that an editor claiming to support AVCHD will be able to handle anything.
